AMERICAN GOLF TITLE
Shute Defeats Thomson Beating James Thomson, the 20-year-old Scottish-born golfer, by three and two in the 36 holes final at Massachusetts, United States, Densmore Shute, former British open champion, won th'e 1936 American profeesional title. Shute was one up at the 18th hole. This is his first victory in this event, although he was runner-up iii 1931. Shute reached the final when he beat Bill Melhorn by one hole in the semi-final. Shute and Thomson are both sons of Britishers. Thomson '« father was born at Hexham, and he liimself is a native of North Berwick. Shute 's father went to America from Northam, the Nortb Devon village, situated near the West ward Ho golf links. Shute, 34 years old, won the British open champiouship in 1933 after a tie with Graig Wood, and is a Ryder Cup player. He was bbrn in America, went to Ohio 'Oniver-sity, and turned professional eight years ago. Ho was one of the United States professional team which toured Australia and New Zealand three years ago.
