Surprise at New Zealand Championships

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. Perfeet weather prevailed to-day for the second day of the New' Zealand croquet championships. The greens were in excellent eondition. The surprise of Ihe day was the defeat of A. G. F. Ross and Mr Watkins, holders of the Dominion doubles championship, by Mesdames Gambrill and Pitcaithly 26 — 4. Results: CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES First round. — Mesdames Smith and Gilbert beat Mrs Jones and Miss Perrin 26 — 19. Second round. — Mesdames Pitcaithly and Gambrill beat Mesdames Warnes and Whibley, 26 — 17; Mrs Watkins and A. G. Ross beat Miss Morgan and Mrs McLennan, 26 — 10; Ms Bartlett and F. L. Hartnell beat Mesdames Frost and Moss, 26 — 17; Miss Washer and A. Gibbs beat Mrs Cole and J. Tannock, 26 — 12; Mrs Corbet and R. McCreatk beat Mrs Seandrett and G.
