Lost on Mt. Egmont After 4 Night in Crater SEARCH PARTIES OUT

CBy Teleeraph-

NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 20. ' Fears are held for the safety of a Wellington youth, T. Matthews, aged 19 years, who is believed to be lost on Mt. Egmont. Matthews, who climbed to Syme Hut on Fantham's Peak yesterday afternoon in company with a 12-year-old child, Dick Yalentine, continued to the summit in order to sleep in the crater and take photographs at sunrise. He left the younger boy at Syme Hut.% When Matthews had not returned today, Valentine descended to Dawson Falls Hostel, and arrangements were immediately made for search parties to leave the Dawson Falls, North Egmont and Stratford mountain houses, with the intention of working upward and meeting at the summit. The parties converged at the summit late this afternoon, all without finding any sign of the missing youth. The searchers then returned to Syme Hut for the night, and will take up tho search again to-morrow morning. Further parties will set out from the three hostels and will again work toward the top to meet to-day 's party. The searchers who returned to Syme Hut to-night found the spot where Matthews had slept in the crater for the night, but could no find any traceable tracks showing where he had goue this morning. The searching operations are being carried out nnder the direction of Mr. R. Syme, who led about 20 searchers. To-morrow over 50 will be out. Mr. Syme said stormy conditions prevailed on the mountain last night, but the ■ missing youth had five blankets with him, and so would have plenty of warmth. He is also understood to have taken a quantity of food. To-day the weather was clear, although the searchers were hampered by a strong and bitterly cold westerly wind. The missing boy is a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Matthews, Inglis street, Seatoun. Mr. Matthews arrived at the Dawson Falls Hostel from Auckland this afternoon, and later joined the searchers at Fantham's Peak. \
