The prospects for the Wellington Cup meeting to be held at Trentham tomorrow, l'Tiday and Saurday are of the brightest and, with practically the best of the Dominion5 s tkorouglibreds competing, the racing should be of the highest standard. This year's Cup iielcl must .be xegprded as the strongest that has contested this xnile-and-half event for some considerable time. In all there are twenty-five carded, with a promise of at least 20 runners, and of this nuinber fifteen can pasily be given a very fair chance "of success. The open sprint also has a fine field engaged and this, the second leg of the "double," will also be a difiicult raee to win. The total of acceptors for the opening day is 32 in excess of that for the correspondingj day last season. As nsual, the Hawke's Bay district is well ' represented. Itacing commences wifch the

Soloist has done best over hurdles. Taumau won in his last np a race of this sort. Stratosphere is well spolcen of down south — won at his last stait. Soutkland. Convivial, only fair. Soho was unlucky not to win an open handicap at Hastings — good recommendation for a highweight, more so as ho needs a strong horseman. Recolleo tion is another from the other island that must be given a chance. Cricket is on the up-grade. Otaki won two "bracelets55 at Marton. BrTgadore is preferred over- hurdles, but Maestro should find this company somewhero near his mark. Nightlass surprised at Wairarapa. Of the light-weights tho best may be Lady Wessex and Southern Blood.. In an even betting contest the most money may be carried by Cricket, Soho and Stratosphere.

Paper Slipper is fast, but five furlongs is a distance that suits. brilliant two-year-olds better tiian the three-year-olds. Dawning| Light and Candico are a brace of Hawke5s Bay-bred fillies that can muster up a lot of pace, but class may tell its tale here. Nelumbo will hardly take on this lot. Sardius is not starting. Praneis Drake has earned the full 141bs. penalty, having won over £1200. He is voted the best youngster of the season, so will occupy a prominent place in the betting. Crooner has speed, and the trip to Ellerslie recently will have improved Mr, Lowry5s colt both in racing condifcion and experience. -Screamer, like his sire Hoylake, is not dependable and runs all over the track. Landing will not start. Relative goes fast, as does also Greenwich, but of the three fillies at the bottom of the hst the best credentials are-those of Brunhilde. Seven of this field were bred in Hawke's Bay. The favouritos may be Francis .Drake. Paper Slippeir and Candico.

War Lap and Airing are both fair over this particular distance and the same is applicable to Export, who, however, was very lucky in winning his last race at Tauherenikau. Petersham comes up from the South Island with some reputation andt having won on his "last three starts, must be treateci with respeet. Good Sun has little form. The Bigot won a maiden at Awapuni. Master Limond may find seven. not far enough. Old Surrey bas speed and also is on the improve. Day Dress won at Awapuni, but the opposition was not good. Rotoma and Mittio both can gallop, but of the two the former is preferied over this distance. What will be better backed than Petersham, Rotoma and The Bigot?

Some smart youngsters have paid up in this two-vear-old event. Having vi on over £150, Top Row is not eligible to start. Mr. F. Ormond's filly, Goira. possesses an abundance of speed. he will never appeal. Screen Star or Seaham may surprise. Yale won a maiden event recently, beating a poor lot. Flood Tide's form in publie and lus track worlc since arriving in Trentham will cause him to start favourite. Very consistent has Argentic been this season, especially over this, his best distance. Ever since the appearance of the weights the geneial opinion has been that Queen of Song was the pick of the handicap. TJndoubtedly a lir&tclass mare, she has strong pretensiong to winning her second Wellington Oup. Vintage, being unsound, has had littio racing this last two seasons, so will liavo to be takeu on trust. Dungarvan is in our first flight of handicap horses, but has* still to win over 12 furlongs, chougjh his breeding suggests him "getting this distance. Hazoor is fit and well, but may not run out the distance as well as some oi the opposition. The consistent Seotland can handle any going. From a w.f.a. point of view nothing appeis more than Lowenberg, who won last year's Derby and now at I31bs. beiovv w.f.a. pomt of view nothing appeals he is at his best wiien the going is easy or soft. The Hastings-trained candidate, Tiger Gain, only adds io the puzzle. He is as fit as hands can get him and, demg at Dome over the distance, his chances must be considered gopd. Essex, on his Auckland form, is another with first class references. Guarantee, Great Star, Lapel, Maine, Rebel Lad and Tunne'ller all have light weights, but form does not point their way over this distance. Ponty, yet untried as a stayer, has possibilities. " Polydora, in at the minimum, appeals on that point only. Terry and Rona Bay are likely light-weights. Limbohm will be suited to the going, !>ut it is doubtful if he is fit enough at present to go 1^ mile against such formidable company. It is a great and even field of handicap bortses and even picking for a place may prove difiicult. Perhaps when the last ticket is sold the highest invetments will be registered on Floodtioe, Lowenoerg, Oratory and Essex.

Namakia represents class, but she has not raced since Waipa. Knockiin will have a track to her liking, as also will the consistent Pakanui. Greek Gold' is no spent light, as he demonstrated at Auckland, and he is perhaps . the best mud-lark in the Domniion today. Concertpitch. a proved first-class I performer who ineludes the Great Eas- j ter amongi his victories. Lady Kvra won twice over the holidays. How good Gold Boa may be is not yet knowp, but her form so far is most difiicult to pass over. The straight six may teJJ against the ^rilliant iVarl. When at his best he is a' first-class sprinter. Laughing Lass's form over the holiday meetings was of the best. Even the balance of the aceeptors all have form suggestive of a chance of winning such a race as this.
