A Baker's Business

"NEDDY'S DRIVER."

(To the Editor) Sir, — Kindly permit me a little further latitude for a short reply to our worthy friend Mr Turner, because when a man eommences to heave bricks he must expect to get a few in return. No, Mr Turner, "Neddy's Driver" is no slave driver, and his old boss is still in Hastings and always wears a cheery smile and is still in the bread business. I am willing, sir, to express regret to Mr Turner if I put a misconstruction on the meaning of his letter when I thought he meant the poor old baker was only making a farthing per loaf profit; yes, sir, one fall to him. Mr Turner admits selling bread at 7d per loaf over the counter during his business career. Well, good luck to him for getting away with it, and all I can say, it is a good job ,for him there was no Labour Government ia power in those days to fix the price; otherwise he would have had to hang on a little longer to make his surplus ' ' dough. " No, Mr Turner, I never bought a loaf of bread from. you, in- my life, and I never owned the. same business as you refer to in your letter, and I never had anything to do with the bread which you say was used for a road foundation. I would like Mr Turner to know L have been in Hastings for the past 28 years and \that is my reason for replying to his letter to-night, because I feel rather guilty on account of his putting the blaine for my letters on some innocent person out of Hastings. In conclnsion I wish to state that as far as I am concerned there is no personal feeling, but for business reasons l must sisn myself — Yours, etc..

Hastings, Jan. 19, 1937. (As "Neddy's Driver" is shooting from behind cover of anonymity this unequal duel will have to cease. Mr Turner has the honourable satisfaction of having openly contributed his experieneed opinions to the discussion. The correspondence is now closed.— Ed.)
