Two Buildings Gutted At , Te Kaiti DEFENCE EQUIPMENT LOST

TE KUITI, Jan. 18. A disastrous fire occufred at Te Kuiti last night at 10 o'clock when a Jarge iron building was destroyed and the smaller public hall gutted. Both belong to Messrs Barraud and Abraham. Four machine-guns and two trench mortars belonging tb the Defence Department were damaged and a number of rifles, harness and rangie-finders were destroyed. The egorts of the brh gade saved Sparks's paint shop, but a XJOition of the stook was damaged. The insurance on the building was held by the Commercial Uniott Office, out the amounb is not available. It is estimuted that the total dam&ge will amount to £3000. The origiii of the fire ie a mystery. No function was held in the building that night.
