Retiring From The Magistracy MR SAVAGE'S TRIBUTE

WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. The Prime Miaister, the Bt. Hon. M. J. Savage, to-day announced that Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., was retiring from office as Magistrate and from the special service which he has heen rendering for the past two and a half years nnder the direction * of the Minister of Finance. Mr Savage stated that the Government was very sorry ,to lose Mr Barton 's services. Much of Mr Barton 's work had heen of a public charaeter and the country would not readily forget his outstanding services in the reconstruction of Napier and on the Companies Investigation Compassion. In addition to that, xnembers of Cabinet had found xeason to value the work that Mr Barton had nndertaken from time to time in an advisory capacity and in making special investigations. Recently Mr Barton had discussed with the Prime v Minister the possibility of his leaving the Government service to take charge of the affairs of a. New Zealend finaneial institution controlling over a quarter of a million of funds Tepresenting popular savings and investments. While then expressing regret at the prospect of losing Mr Barton 's services, Mr Savage had agreed that the new task represented a,n important public service, and Mr Barton now leaves the service of the Government and the earnest belief is that his work will still command confidence and success.
