Intoxicated Driver Fined at Hastings SEQUEL TO COLUSION A fine of £lo and suspension of his driver 's licence for six months were the penalties imposed upon Thomas Albert Henry Connell at the Hastings Police Court this morning when he pleaded guilty to a, charge of heing found in charge of a motor vehicle while in a state of intoxication. Messrs H. W> C. Baird and A. J. C. Runciman, J.P.'s presided, and the accused was represented by Mr C. Duff. Senior-Sergeant Sivyer said that the accused was concerned in a slight motor collision with a taxi at the intersection of St. Aubyn street and Karamu road shortly before five o'clock yesterday afternoon. When questioned immediately after the accident by the police' he was found to be in a state of intoxication and was taken to the station. There he was examined by a doctor, who certified that he was not in a fit state to drive a motor vehicle. "It is not a bad case of intoxicafcion, thougli tlier© is no doubt that he was not in a fit state to drive a car," said the police officer. "Tlie doctor who examined him knew his pi*evious medical history, the defe.ndant having been a victim about two years ago in an explosion, and it was possible that because of thds a small amount of liquor migbt have affected him more than expected." Mr. Duff said the facts as outlined by the police were a fair explanation of the position, and he urged that under the special circumstances the case was not one in which imprisonment should be imposed. Tbe Bench issued a warning to tbe accused and directed attention to the serioustiess of tlie charge beforq impoBIng the penalty me&fibn^d.
