CHOICE OF A NEWSPAPER

In his foundation address to the members of the Canterbury University College Union Society in Christchurch Mf. Ivor Brown chose as his subject "Journalism, in Our Time." "The choice of your daily newspaper or newspapers, and other periodicalSj and I think that everybody who can possibly afford it should take several," Mr. Brown told the students, "is a choice of supreme importance, and it should not be lightly decided, if you consider yourselves rational human beings and responsible citizens. Certainly it should not be decided by petty calculations as to prizes, competitions and insurances. If you want to have the benefits of the dole press, by all means have them, but remember that real journalism exists outside and above these sheets of irrelevant generosity. Life becomes harder and harder for the serious papers which spend their money on essential newspaper services, such as full and fair reports of all important matters, expert foreign correspondence, considered reviews. Their existence is essential to the health of our civilisation. That existence depends on you."
