JnEW YORK, January 15. In connection with the Case bath tub murder on June 13, less than 32 hours after his confession, a negro, called Green, was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder. He tendered ^ plea of not guilty and was taken to gaol to await his triial on Fobruary r. Wbile being led in the twilight from the Court-house to gaol he was surrounded by a ciwd of about eighty persons, mostly women, who screamed imprecations and threats, including "Lynch him." They struck him on the head with umbrellas and sticks, spat on him and scratched and slappkd him. A patrolman handcuffed to Green was the target of nearly as many blows as the prisoner and was unable to defend himself due to the manacles. Other policemen came to the rescue and opened a path for the patrolman and his prisoner to run to the gaol. Neither was seriously hurt and none of the crowd wias arrested. . Green, after f orty hours ' intermittent questioning, confessed that he entered the Case flat for the purpose of theft and encountered Mrs Qase. He smashed her head with a hammer, half strangled her and dragged her screaming to a bathtub, filled with water. He drew a bedspread over her to stifle her cries. Green named another negro as his accomplice, but the police disbelieve him and think he is trying to iuvolve the other due to a grudge.
