i i i a ^i a Mr Barnard Says Remarks Were Asked For "BRIEF" FROM CLERK "Life is too^ real aad stremioue to waste time over an argumeiit wMeh. I repeat for the second time, can best be settled by Mr Nash. himself on his return to the Dominion, stated the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P., yesterday, when replying to comments made by the chairman of the Hawke 's Bay County Council, Mr F. B. Logan, regarding the dispute about county ratea on Grown lands. "Mr Logan is again under a misapprehension," he added. "I have not re-opened any controversy, He will be pleased, if surprised, to learn that 1 raised the queption of the Government's responsibility of rates on behalf of the county itself. I had in my hand a carefully prepared brief from the county clerk, from which I read an extract. In pas-sing I referred without comment fo the faet that a statement had been attributed by the county chairman to the Hon. W, Nash, but added that whether or not the alleged statement had been made it was desired to know the Government attitude on the subject. "The tone of my remarks as well as that of the Minister's was entirely temperate. Life ip too real and strenuoas to wgste time over an argument which, I repeat for the second time, can best be settled by Mr Nash himoeJf on his retnrn to the Dominion if Mr Logan will possese himself in patience until then. I may add that on my return to Napier at the end of the month I propose to inspect the Pakowhai road to which I understand the Council is at la-st giving attention in accordap.ce with its promise,"
