PEGAWAY WINS CORNWALL. STEWARDS’ TO GAY PAREE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Juno 21. The Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting opened to-day in showery weather. The track was heavy. There was a fair- attendance, including Lord and. Lady Bledisioe. The totalisator handled £15,22(5 10s, compared with &l t 4,555 5s on the first day last year. (Details of the day’s concluding events are:— STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Of £130; « miles. 2- Nell Volo, It. (Smith) 1 ' 1- Gay PaTee, 36 (Shaw) .... 2 4-4 Explosion, 60 (Clifton) ... 3 Also started: 7-7 Billy Carbine, 3-3 {Moko Girl It., (5-6 Zanzibar 24, 5-5 Bessie Parrish, 4-4 Dark McKinney 48 (bracketed with Explosion), 8-8 Gold •Sovereign 96. Won by a length and a half, two lengths and a half between second and ■third. Times, 3.45 3-5> 3.41 4-5, 3.41 ;l-5. Billy Carbine, who set the pace all the way, was -well clear of Gay Paree and Nell Yolo across the back. Nell Volo was first into the straight from Billy Carbine, Gay Paree and Explosion. Nell Volo went on to win easily from Gay Paree and Explosion, with Billy C-arbine fourth. CORNWALL HANDICAP. Of £150; II miles. 3- Pegaway, It. (Smith) ..... 1 2- Prince Pedro, It. (McMillan) 2 1-1 Kewpie’s Triumph, 36 (J. BryCe) 3 .. Also started: 5-5 Peterwalx It., 7-7 -■Nelson Tasker 12, 6-6 Stanmoor 36, 4-3 Engwah 60. Won by a neck, a head between sec,ond ,and third. Times, 2.59 3-5, 2.59 4-5, 2.-57. . Pegaway made the early running from Prince Pedro and Nelson Tasker. The two leaders stayed on to .just take tost and second in a great finish. 'Nelson Tasker weakened and Kewpie’s Triumph was third and Enawah fourth, both finishing from well back. MARCONI HANDICAP. Of £120; II miles. 3- Guid Hairst, 24 (C. Smith) 1 1-1 Te Mahanga, It. (Broughton) 2 8-5 Homeward, 72 (August) .. 3 Also-started: 3-2 Mazda It. (bracketed "with Guid Hairst), 5-6 Daddy Longlegs, 4-4 Francis Lincoln, 23 Wee Machine 24, G-7 Hohoro, 7-8 Jackie Thorpe 36. "Won by three-quarters of a length, two lengths and a half between second and third. Times, 3.2 2-5, 3.4 4-5, 3.0. Te Mahanga led to the turn, where he -was followed by Guid Hairst, Homeward and Jackie Thorpe. Guid Hairst proved too good in the run home, winning well from To Mahanga. Homeward stayed on to take third. Wee Machine, who finished well from far back, was fourth.
