KAPONGA

BOWLERS’ DANCE.

There was a very good, attendance at the Kaponga Bowling Club’s dance in the Parish Hall on Thursday evening. Alusic was supplied by Jack Hooker’s Orchestra, extras being played by Miss V. Fever. Messrs W. Cran and W. Taylor were Al’s.O., and supper arrangements were under the supervision of Alesdames N. Gardner and J. Dawson.

The novelty dances during the evening resulted: Alonte Carlo, Aliss’H. Guy and Air M. Hickey; statuette, Mrs J. O’Donoghue and Mr T. Reid; spot waltz, Miss M. Ivehely and Air W. Gardner.

After supper Mr W. G. Oran, a vicepresident of the club, presented the silver cups donated by Air H. T. Mellow' (Alalioe) to the winners, Alessrs J. Dawson and *S. Palmer, and congratulated the recipients upon winning the trophies-. In his reply Air J. Dawson (president) said the competition foi* the cups had provided some very enjoyable games. He thanked Mrs J. Pa.scoe for donating a cushion which had been the subject of a competition during the evening, the winner being Air H. J. Syme, No. 7. ST. AIARK’S VESTRY.

The first meeting of the new St. Afark’s Vestry was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening, the vicar, the Rev. A. .1. Farnell, presiding. The following members' were present: Alessrs A. V. Tait, W. J. A. Farnell, J AV. H. Gardner, O. N. Gordge, A. H. Burt, R. A. Grace, L. A. Wells, F. AV. Fallows, AAL A. O’Neill and E. S. Death. La extending a welcome to the’ two new members (Alessrs Gardner and O’Neill) the vicar said that this was the first occasion for some years that he had seen a full meeting of the vestry and expressed pleasure at being able to preside over such a meeting. The question of erecting a suitable memo-rial to the late Mr . Allan Grace came forward for discussion, and it was decided to keep, the matter in view and to give parishioners an early opportunity of contributing on a small scale towards the cost of a small tablet.

It was also decided to hold a working bee, when weather conditions are favourable, for the purpose of repairing . the fences and generally tidying up round the church precincts. Following a report from .synod in connection with the church finances., a lengthy discussion ensued regarding the question of finance respecting the Kaponga and Opunake vestries.

SCHOOL SPORTS.

The second round of the South Taranaki Schools’ Rugby championship was comrfienced on Friday afternoon, when Kaponga school team journeyed to Kapuni and played a team from that school. The game was hard fought and resulted in a win for Kapuni by six to three. Kaponga’® score was obtained by Behl, who played well, and merited liis being selected for the school reps. Kapuni’s score was made up, of one try from a scrummage on the line and a goal from a free lack. Mr Oh as . Paterson was the referee.

The Kaponga girls’ combined basketball team also visited Kapuni on Friday to play a friendly match with the Kapuni girls. The score was: Kaponga 15, Kapuni nil. The referees were Aliss Buckeridge and Aliss Guppy.

PERSONAL AND GENERAL.

Alessrs Newton Hudson and Jim Gardner, junr., have returned after spending three weeks in touring the North Island by motor car. The party had some exciting experiences during the tour, including a capsize on a bridge near Hamilton and difficulties in fording rivers in the Gisborne district. The weather during the three weeks, with the exception of two’days, was beautifully fine. The unemployment register at Kaponga at present contains the names of 24 men. Three are single men, 15 married men with up to two children', and six married men with three or more children. Applications for hoots from workers who have been registered 26 weeks are now being received. When all are in application will be made to headquarters for the supply.
