HAWERA HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LOAN CONVERSION SCHEME! Reporting at the monthly meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board to-day regarding the .board’s proposail t*o convert { its budding loan of £50,000, the chair- 1 man (Mr J. S. McKay) stated that) probably *a new course of action might have to be taken, as the Government Loans Board had expressed the opinion that the loan wa.s in the nature of an overdraft and, therefore, did not come under the general conversion -'scheme. However, further information on the subject had been requested from the Loans* Board, and! when the full grounds of its decision were known the question would be further considered. The medical .superintendent (Dr. J. Cbirney) reported that the daily average of occupied Ibedls during May was 68.2, the daily average t-o each of the nursing .staff being 2.2. Twenty-nine hospital and 13 private X-ray cases, had been dealt with, while 434 physiotherapeutic treatments had been given, an average of 17.4 pr day. A total of 135 out-patients had attended during The gift of fruit, jaan and pickles the month, 446 treatments being given, from ladles of the Amro a Presbyterian Church and of magazines from Mr Gibson was acknowledged with thanks by the master of the Old People’s Home (Air J. Mitdhell). The number of inmates in the home was 16. A donation of £5 5s wa;s received from the Haw-era Trotting Club. , FRIENDLY SOCIETY PAYMENTS The Hospital Boards’ Association forwarded a suggested clause for inclusion in Friendly Society agreements. The object of the. clause is to cover a Friendly Society contributor who incurs expenses for treatment which, if he were not a contributor, he could recover from an insurance oqfnjpany. The clause provides that, the Friendly Societies’ Council should not be liable unless* tiro patient or the board cannot recover the cost from a- third party. The present position is that a Friendly Society patient involved in a.n accident covered, for example, by the Workers’ Compensation Act, does not receive any hospital expenses from an insurance company. Tlj,e Hospital Board, therefore, receives only the proportion of its fees provided by agreement with the council. Under the clause* proposed the board would secure full fees and the Friendly Societies Council would not hav.ei to. pay. The board decided to* include the clause in the agreement if the Friendly Societies Council were willing. BE-ENGAGEMENT OF NURSES* To maintain the proportionate grading of nur'ses on the staff the board decided to* reengage three nurses who had finished their training and had resigned. The matron (Miss C. Hunter) recommended that tliis course he adopted. She had tried to secure the services of partly-trained nurses, but none suitable wa.s available. Dr. Oairmey .stated that if fresh probationers wore taken on there would he a. large proportion of juniors on the staff, which was not desirable. ! Similarly, in two years all these juniors would be seniors, of whom there would he too large a proportion. It would, therefore, .be desirable to retain the services of these nurses for another three months. LEVIES 'ON LOCAL.
