SOLDIERS’ CLUB SOCIAL
COMMUNITY SINGING. CONTESTS IN TABLE GAMES. Despite the wintry conditions prevailing last night a good attendance was recorded at the community sing and competitions evening held at the Soldiers’ Club, Hawera. A pleasing featm'e was the presence of a large number of young people t The first half-hour was occupied with community singing, Mrs. A. J. Corrigan again presiding at the piano with Mr. Collier as song leader. A number of local hits in. the form of limericks proved very popular. At the conclusion of the sing the ping-pong, billiards and bowls competitions were played and resulted as follows: Billiards, Mrs. R. E. Marter and Mr. F. E. Starling; pingpong, Miss N. Edwards and Mr. Badcoclc; bowls, Mrs. R. E. Marter and Mr. H. Edwards. Tlie final of both the billiards and bowls competitions were very keenly fought and the result was in doubt, 'in both cases, right up to the last minute. As an earnest of the desire to provide comfort for the patrons of both the euchre and social evenings the committee lias acquired the use of extra beaters, so that tlie room, always favourably commented upon for its warmth, has now been rendered luxuriously comfortable for everybody. The committee has also solved the hitherto annoying problem of high, seats and patrons of the euchre tournament to be held on Tuesday night next are assured of this additional comfort. During the evening supper was served by the ladies’ committee.
