HAWERA CITIZENS’ RELIEF

WEEKLY RATIONS DISTRIBUTED PROPOSAL FOR A CHARITY BALL Assistance was given to 49 families in Hawera. this morning bv the weekv distributfbn of rations to registered unemployed in their stand-down week. The following commodities were made up into parcels and issued in sizes according to the number of children in each familv: 2-5Jb tea, 2001 b sugar, 1081 b oatmeal, 2981 b flour, 68 loaves or bread (coupons) mid ,531 b butter. The Hawera Citizens’ Relief Committee responsible for the rations distributed acknowledges with thanks donations of a can of milk from the Hawera Assembly, a quantity of cakes and sandwiches from the Hawera Scottish Society and ~n~ oox or butter and '■o bodies of cheese from a South Taranaki dairy company, also one penny handed to Mrs. M. Campbell at Campbell’s Bakery by an unknown child towards the fund to “feed the inuig,rv people.” The child walked into ihe shop on her own accord and stated the purpose tor which she desired to live her penny. At the last meeting of the committee, at which the Mayor (Mr. J. F. Campbell) presided, a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. W. Hawkins was passed, those present rising in silence. Mr. Hawkins had been a most sympathetic, worker in the relief of distress in .he town. The proposal to hold a week-end carnival was discussed, but in view of the unsuitable weather prevailing at this time of the year it was deemed advisable to abandon the project. The committee, however, decided to proceed with the arrangements for the Mayors’ Monster Charity Ball to be

organised jointly by the Mayor and Mr. W. J.' Bright. * It is proposed to hold the ball in the Winter Show Buildings on spectacular lines towards the end of July, to he followed on the next night by a children’s plain and . .nicy-dress ball.
