REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY
TRIAL MATCH AT HAWER A
SOUTH AND CENTRAL DIVISIONS
By four goals- to two a South Taranaki men’s representative hockej eleven yesterday afternoon heat the nick of players m the Central day) Division in a trial- match at H - wera, for the selection of the Ta.raiiMa represent at ive team to meet Hoio whenua in the first Nor den Cup of the season. Hie ground at King Edward Park was in good order but the players and a large liumbe spectators on the side hue hat contend with a bitterly cold south tvind which made outdoor conditions anything but pleasant in exposed localBoth sides were fairly evenly balanced and a draw would perhaps have been a fair indication of their relative merits. The pace throughout was a merry one and plav swung from one end of the field to the other. the South forwards were particularly aggressive, the Central backs in turn providing good attacking and defending strength. Tho South haisves, with the exception of Brough, did not reproduco their best form, white Ryan was also off liis game. Thomson and Abbott (in goal), however, stiffened the defence, the former’s stick work being very good. The Central team played well in patches. Surgenor was the m-ost prominent forward after a shaky start, his stick w-ork being delightful. Belli and Pennington also played well. The halves! were not in form, though on tho day they probably were moire effective than the South. Pitcher played well and Bennett in goal made some good saves. Central was a- man short and Shaw (Hawera) played left full-back.
Teams were a-s follow: South. Abbott (Manaia) ; Ryan (Alihain-o-ra), Thompson (Egmont); i3ii n ou{ or ii (Klgmoait), unco. 11 , Grui.ckshanks (Alhambra); Wmdle (Egmo ut), Moloney (Egmont), Matson (Alhambra), Fleet (Alhambra), lcrcy (Egmont)'. • . , Central. —Bennett, S-haw (substitute); V. liett-s, K. Albon 3 Mj " hill; Bennie, C. Belli, Pennington, burgenor, Oateil. Central severely tested the southern defence during the first few minutes and Pennington went- well within striking distance of the goal. A bright c;ouniter-movement was launched, Moloney, Fleet and Percy sweeping through their opponents with the ball in great style. Central conceded a penalty corner and wore able to break away to the South circle, where a smart piece of stick work by Thompson averted a sure goal. South retaliated. Brough used his stick to good advantage in a pretty movement which beat his opponent. A centre pass gave the forwards a chance and Percy carried the ball along oil his .stick to the circle, passing to Fleet. The latter completed the 'effort' with a< hot shot into the corner of the net. —South 1, Central 0. The Central forwards warmed to their wo-rk and had the South hacks defending .solidly. The Ryan-Tliompson fulluadk combination proved hard to beat and tlic invaders were held in check. Thompson in particular was most versatile and every shot wa.s delivered in faultless style. Windle, playing on the wing, carried the ball back along the line and centred for Bennett to return to lialf-way. South attacked vigorously and V\ incite and Watson were together, "Watson centring for Bennett once more to return to midfield. Percy, in a, handy position, received the ball and sent it up high into the ton of the net.—South 2, Central 0. ,
Individual play was of a high standard, but as a team neither side gave much evidence of combination. There were few passing rushes and scores resulted from side-line attack, a last minute centre pass to the circle and smart shooting. Opening the second spell Watson took the South forwards on the attack and carried the ball well down into- Central’s territory, where Bennett gave a good display of goalkeeping, although his tendency was to advance too far into the circle from the goal month. Central next attacked, the bulk of the work falling to Belli and Surge nor. Belli in particular played attractively and was an expert in the handling of his stick. Abbott also played safe in goal and seldom was flurried oir caught out of place. The pressure was maintained and -from a, melee in the circle Belli beat Thompson and scored Central’s first goal.—South 2, Central 1. Immediately from the bully another snr-amlbte resulted in Surgen-o-r getting ira-st Abbott to score.—South 2, Central o
From half-way Thompson sent a hot si lot: to Watson, ivlio in turn centred to Moloney. Bennett ran out to stop it and Moloney placed the ball in the ocirner. — 3, Central 2. Central next bad a. turn at attack and Si luge nor bad a, chance but Abbott proved too good and the movement elided! in a corner. From half-way Watson carried the ball thuioogh to the circle and there palssed to Moloney, who beat Bennett to the goal.—South 4, Central 2. The referees were Messrs 0. Harding (Kaponga) and A. Stevens (Hawera).
