The Secretary to tho United States Navy, Mr. Swanson, has formally announced a 238-million dollar naval building programme under which it is intended to put 32 new ships on the waters in three years. President Roosevelt had agreed to allocate funds out of the 3,300,000,000 dollars' public works appropriation and “is anxious to have the work done as soon as possible,” said Mr. Swanson. He added: “We will build to the fullest capacity of the shipyard facilities as quickly as possible. Wo want to put people to work at shipbuilding where 85 per cent, of the expenditure goes to labour. “The. programme calls for 20 destroyers of which 16 are. in the 1500-ton class, four in the 850-ton class and two are aircraft carriers, not exceeding 20.000 tons, four are of 10,000-ton class six-inch cruisers, four are .submarines and two are gunboats for Chinese waters.”
