JAPANESE THREATS
TARIFFS ON EMPIRE GOODS
COTTON INDUSTRY COMPETITION
INSISTENCE, ON ADJUSTMENT.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph
Copyright.) Received 2 p.m. to-day. LONDON, June 15. (The Japanese economic federation has telegraphed'British industries, the associated British Chambers of Commerce and tlie Manchester Chamber of Commerce that it is anxious to conclude adequate trade agreements with Britain with a view to adjusting the intense competition, and in this connection regrets the recent attitude oi the British cotton industry, which is considered to be antagonistic to the traditional Anglo-Japanese friendship. The Japanese cotton interests are so perturbed over the revision of the Indan import tariff that they are preparing to boycott Indian raw cotton, states the federation. Japan may also impose a prohibitive tariff on wool, wheat and other products imported from Britain and the Dominions. 'The recipients of the telegram have replied: “Such a tariff would have disastrous results. We earnestly hope that an exchange of views will result m harmony. The present situation ns grave and intolerable to- British industrial and commercial interests, who are in no way associated with independent Indian action.”
