The Austrian Chancellor, Dr Doifuss, thrice conferred with Sir .John Simon and M. Daladier this morning, asking that the major Powers should use their influence with Germany m connection with the Austro-German crisis, and it is understood that Britain and others have formally approached Germany.
Dv. Dolfuss, immediately after his speech at the World Economic Conference. left for Vienna in his own powerful aeroplane.
REPRISAL AT BERLIN,

Dr. Erkin Wasserbaeck, chief of the Press department of the Austrian Legation, was arrested as a reprisal for the arrest in Vienna of Herr Habicht, regarded as Herr Hitler’s chief emissary in Austria. Dr. WasserbaeclC was released and expelled from Germany. A detachment of secret police knocked at Dr. Wasserbaeck 's flat at 2 o'clock this morning and told him they had Herr Goering's order to arrest him. Dr. Wasserbaeck -efused to open until he telephoned Dr. Dolfuss (Austrian Premier) in London. Dr. Dolfuss advised him to yield only to force. He then opened the door. Dr. Lausckitz, Austrian Minister, lodged a vigorous protest at Dr. Wasserbaeck's arrest. 'Dr Dolfuss communicated with Baron Von Neurath (German Foreign Minister) in London, stating the arrest, was a violation of diplomatic rights. Herr Habicht is reported to have begun a hunger strike.

Police throughout the country have closed 170 Nazi Brown Houses, questioned 3000 Nazis and arrested 400, of whom 40 are German citizens.
The nine special security commissioners appointed by Cabinet arc. mostly generals and colonels who will be virtual dictators of the respective provinces,, being empowered to deal with any emergency. .
