ICING’S BIRTHDAY BURGLARY

A story of how a dwelling-house in Evans Bay Road was entered on the King’s Birthday and a quantity of jewellery stolen was rebated to Mr E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court to-day when William George John Durning, labourer, aged 22, and James Lawrence Jamieson Tait, labourer, aged 23, pleaded guilty to charges of breaking and entering" the premises and stealing the jewellery. Richard Edward Metz, manager for the Lambton Quay -branch of R. Hannah and Co., said lie left his residence, leaving all the doors and windows with the exception of a fanlight, securely locked. Upon his return he found the back door open and the house ransacked. Among the articles was jewelIwv worth about ’£2o. Detective Oa-mpin said that on Juno 7 lie went with Darning to a house in A.ro Street, where he dug up from the garden a bundle containing articles of jewellery. At the detective office Durning made a statement to the cffect th.at he and Tait broke into Me-tz.’s house and took certain jewellery. They later .sold sonic to gold buyers. When interviewed Tait also admitted the burglary. Detective Oampin said there were still certain articles missing and from libs interviews with the two. men he thought Dimming had taken them. Both accused pleaded guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was refused.
