YOUNG PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY
ST. JOHN’S INSTITUTE.
A meeting of St. John’s Young People’s Institute was held on Monday evening at the Presbyterian Hall, Hawera. Mr. E. C. Glen presided over a record attendance for the year. The first part of the evening was taken up with -one -or two musical items and the reading of literary contributions by members. Several members had chosen from “The Hawera Star” and “The Taranaki Daily News” articles which they considered to- be the most important in the paper of June 3. Members spoke for a few minutes on their chosen articles, giving reasons for tlieir selections. Much humour was added by the differences of opinion, which ranged from a recipe for leek pie to a peace contract between China and Japan. Following this, Mr. R Syrae gave a lanterh lecture on mountaineering on the Southern Alps. He' told of many exciting and perilous experiences oi various climbers in these mountains, and also of his own experiences there. Mr. Glen thanked Mr. Syme for his indness in giving the lecture and members heartily reciprocated Mr. Glen’s remarks.
