The fortnightly “SQO” card evening arranged iby tlie Hawera. Bowling Club was held at the pavilion in Hawera on Monday' evening, when there was a further large attendance. Prizes were won iby Messrs D. MoGormiek (first), A. E. Spratt (second) and G. Lovell (consolation).

A fuirther complementary social to Miss Olga Bowen, of Marton, was tendered by Miss M. Macßae at the home of Mrs' C. Macßae in Hawera, last Thursday evening. Songs were contributed' by Misses J. MoGlashan, G. Trotter, M. Lamb and M. Macßae, a pianoforte duet by Miss J. Thomas and Mr. L. Paoey and a piano solo by Mr. J. Mcßae. Community singing was led bv Mr. T. Young with Miss T. McGlashan at the piano while interspersing these items were’ dances played for by Miss McGlashan and Messrs Pacey and A. G. Macßae. Among others present were Mrs. W. Good, Mrs. Barmby, Mrs. Mathieson, Mrs. Ryan and Missies M. Mathieson, S. Ryan, V. Ryan and B. Stevens. Representatives of the governing board and! committee and of the respective staffs of the Hawera Technical High School and Haiwera Main School were the guests of the Hafwera Theatre Company at a private screening in the Opera House this morning of “Siege of the South,” the official film record of the British, Australian and New land Antarctic Research Expedition led by Sir Douglas Mawson. The picture, which is produced and photographed by Captain Frank Hurley, official photographer, is the property of the Oomtnomwealth Government of Australia and) a big percentage of the monies received from its exhibition are being reserved for future Antarctic and sciem tific research work. It is. an authentic record of honv another continent was won for the British Empire as well as a* graphic and stirring portrayal of the achievements of the expedition. The story of the work undertaken by Sir Douglas Mawson and his companions in the “Discovery” is narrated by Captain Hurley and besides effective sound there is .a reproduction of old sea chanties and in parts an appropriate musical accompaniment. Interviewed by a “Hawera Star” reporter at the conclusion of the performance Mr J. Dash, principal of the Hawera. Technical High School, described tlier picture as being of an, unusual and most interesting tvpe and of definite educational value. Hie photography was excellent. This afternoon the pupils of Hawera schools attended a. special matinee and to-mor-row afternoon at the G rand Theatre the pupils of the Tawhiti, Turuturu. Eraser Road, Normanby and Tokaora Schools will attend.
