WOMEN AND EMPLOYMENT.
The Nazis in Gemiany are. credited with the idea of creating domestic servants by giving the employer exemption from certain taxation. Fo ( r instance, “to, encourage the keeping of servants, householders' are to be relieved of the payment of unemployed insurance and will receive a considerable reduction of income tax, as a domestic .servant is regarded as a member of the family.” It seems, then, that ■this German idea is a two-women household:. But at the -same time another cablegram from Japan reports that, in Japan, “the surplus girl population in agrarian districts provides an almost illimitable supply of doeilp, dexterous labour” —which girl labour is used by .Japanese manufacturers to undercut the prices of Western manufactures in the world’s markets. How r will this Eastern competition affect the living of the Western two-women household? It may be added that the Nazis’ proposed inducements to marry—including loans to young couples, provided by taxes on the unmarried—are calculated also ito increase domestic service. A loan-receiv-ing wife is restricted in her employ-ment-receiving privileges.
