SUFFER THROUGH FLOODS

' CARTERTON, Dec. ‘3l. ..Hon.- A. D. McLeod (Minister of Lands), accompanied by Air. J. I. Thompson (Under-Secretary)' and Mr: Sutherland (the ranger) paiijl a flying visit yesterday to the Maraamu, Pihautea and Tawaha. soldier and Crown settlements to inspect the flood clam age and the river erosion. They found that a. number of /’settlers had suffered largely/ as a result of the, recent floods. Fences were flattened' anc] . 1 ucerue. and h,ay qi - destroyed, -.while in many eases pastures were' practically ruined for the balance of the milking season through silt jcleposit. . The river erosion'"at 'Several places assumed .serious proportions, and it was decided that a report be procured from - the Public Works Department as to the -best method of dealing with the situationi It was. intended to visit Te Whiti and Te Oreore settlements also, but time did not permit. '
