TIM/DESMEIN ’ S ASSOCIATION.

There was a fair attendance of members at the meeting of the Patea Tradesmen’s Association, which was held in the Borough Chambers on Thursday evening last. Air. F. Ramsbottom presided..

Mr. T. Keane having resigned the secretaryship through having left the district, Mr. E. F. Hemingway was elected to the position. It was .decided to ask the Borough Council to* fix Wednesday as the day on which the weekly half-holiday shall Be observed within the borough. It was resolved to keep the long night in Christmas and .New Year weeks on.'the Wednesday„ and to keep the shops opeiv on Saturdays, 27th December, and' 3rd January, 1925, uiw til 5.30 p.m; < ’ RIPE, PEACHES. ; -Hr is. not often this district pra;duces ripe peaches in the month of November, but such is the ‘ case this year, Air. F. N. Hamlin, of Kakaramea, having been picking the fruit .since the 26th ultimo. The tree from 'v.hich tlie fi-uit. is being gathered is a three-year-o'l<l ‘ ‘Elarly. Alexander, ’ ’ and the fruit: is of good size and shape and delicious. ' ■ ' BOROUGH COUNCIL.

-. A special meeting of the Pa-tea Bbrtugli Oouncil was held bar Monday evening, the business being the consideration of a motion tabled by (Jr. 1). Jones, reducing the number of councillors from' nine to' six, exclusive of the Mayor. His Worship the Mayor., Mr. T. S. Finlayoon, presided*. In moving the motion, Cl*. Jones said; that he had firelight tills matter up some time ago, when, the council had some difficulty in filling vacancies. He thought that six councillors and the Mayor were quite sufficient. to .transact aIL the business the council had to do.

His Worship the Mayor seconded the resolution, and said he was quite in accord with the remarks of Or. Jones. He was quite convinced, after four years’ insight into work done by the council, that six councillors and the Mayor were sufficient to carry out the 'work. His experience showed that the greater the number on the council or on- committees the greater the difficulty to get a quorum.

After further discussion the motion wax carried unanimously, and it was resolved to hold a special meeting on January 26 to confirm same. MEAT COMPANY.

The first statutory meeting of the newly formed Pate a- District Meat Company is t>o be held at the office of the Patea Freezing Co. on Friday next. 19fh. at 10:30' a.m. It is to be hoped that a good attendance of shareholders will he nresent. *
