SUPREME COURT.
NEW PLYMOUTH SITTINGS. The jury was unable to agree on a verdict with regard to the indictment of Herman Arthur Lewis Hahn, alias Arthur Rowland Taylor, whose trial on a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge was completed in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth yesterday. His Honor Mr. Justice MacGregor ordered the accused to appear for another trial at the next sessions of the court, Hahn being released on his former bail of himself in £l5O and two sureties of a like amount. The trial was commenced of Samuel Percy Julian, of Tikorangi, on six charges of incest with four of his daughters Mr. C. H. Weston-(Crown Prosecutor) appeared for the prosecution and Mr. L. M. Moss for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence for the Crown was still being taken when the court rose at 5.30 p.ni. The hearing was to be resumed this morning at 10 o’clock. A decree nisi, which may- be made absolute after three months, was granted Harriet Ellen Messer, now of Auckland, but formerly of Normanby, who petitioned for a dissolution of her marriage with Joseph Messer, on the grounds of desertion. The case was one originally set down for hearing lief ore the judge and a jury of twelve, huts the defence was withdrawn, the res non dent allowing the petition to go without opposition. No application was made for costs. The decree was granted subject to the filing of an affidavit of service. It is reported that the petition by -Tames Stellin for writs of certiorari and mandamus against the Patea Licensing Committee will not now he heard until next session.—News.
