OBITUARY.
mr. alex. McCracken. An old and respected resident of South Taranaki passed to his rest on Tuesday, after a long illness, in the person of Mr Alex. McCracken, of Hawera, and formerly of Manaia. Coming to Taranaki from Canterbury many years ago he first settled on the Hastings road, where he had farmed for some time. About twenty years ago he gave up farming and joined the staff of the then well-known firm of Nolan, Tonics and Co., and when that firm’s business was acquired by' the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., he settled in Manaia as their representative. Mr McCracken was known and esteemd by a large circle of friends in business and private life as a man of sterling character, and by his strong personality was highly respected by all. In liis young days he was prominent in the athletic world in Canterbury, being interested mostly in running. He leaves a widow and grown-up family, to whom will go out deep sympathy*in their sorrow. The funeral took nlace to-day, and was largely attended" by relatives and friends from all over the province, showing the respect in which Mr McCracken was held. The chief mourners were his two sons, and the pallbearers were Messrs Stannard, Green. J. Russell. A. Bissett, R. Morrissey, and J. Paterson. Rev. R. E. Evans officiated in the church and at the graveside. Our Manaia correspondent writes: Deep sympathy was felt in Manaia and district when the sad news of the death of Mr. Alex McCracken, senr., which took place at the Hawera -Hospital on Monday, was received. The deceased was a resident of Manaia for many years, holding the important position a,s agent for the Loan and Mercantile Co. The deceased was a man with Stirling qualities and was well respected by all who knew him. He was a good Sport and also a. good judge of horses and cattle. In his dealings be was most conscientious and his advice was much sought after, and he would always give his client a fair deal. Tn all kinds of sport lie took groat interest. For manv years he was a member of the Horticultural .Society. Hibernian Sports Club, also, the Hunt Club. He was also very successful in the show ring with his horses. The late Mr. McCracken was a very old identity of Taranaki.. He was horn in Canter(South rsi end).
