HAWERA OPERATIC SOCIETY.
ANNUAL PICNIC. The Hawera Operatic Society held its first annual picnic >it Opu/nalOe on Wednesday. About 140 adults and. a number of children were present. The morning was spent in a general splash in the briny, and after aii excellent (unch, an interesting programme; of athletic events was decided, with the following results:— 100 yards sprint, L. Carrol; egg and spoon race, bliss K. Goodson; 75 yards for single ladies, Miss Williams; children’s race. Master S. Hawkins; married ladies’ race, Mrs Kineton Parkes; roller race, Kineton Parkes and W. .Thomas; three-legged race. F. Smith and Miss William's; wheelbarrow race, Miss D. Machin and W. Thomas ; walking race, Kineton Parkes ; leap-frog team race, Fred Smith’s team; “stalamanage,” Kineton. Parkes’ team; thread the needle race, Miss K. Goodson and Miss G. Taylor; relay race, W. Thomas’ team; novelty race, W. Thomas; long jump for ladies, Miss K. Goodson. After tea the annual cricket match was played, the ladies beating the men by 37 runs to 26, the men, of course, reversing their usual hatting style and bowling under-arm. For the victors Miss Cotter made an excellent 29, including five boundaries. About half the company left at clusk, the others remaining for a very enjoyable dance in the kiosk, leaving for Hawera, at about 11 p.m. The society was well received by the people of Opunake, and helped in no small way to add to the enjoyment of the dav.
