A SECRETARY APPOINTED. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 5. Mr P. R. Climie, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, has been appointed secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. JIo will now hold both positions. STEAMER SEARCHED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 5. When the steamer Waitemata arrived at Lyttelton this morning from Newcastle she was thoroughly searched by three detectives and two policemen, evidently in the belief that some Australian criminal was aboard No arrest was made. It is stated that the ponce in the Commonwealth and Dominion are now keeping in closer touch than formerly. LABOUR CANDIDATES. DUNEDIN, Dec. 5. Ihe Otago Labour Council lias nominated Messrs C. M. Moss, J. Gilchrist, MacManus, and J. W. Munro, M.i .. as candidates for next general election. It. also nominated candidates for the City Council, Hospital Board, and Harbour Board.
