(Received Dec. 4, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 3. ihe mysterious < “Mr A” is Sir Hari bingh, nephew of the Maharajah of Kashmir. : [Kashmir or Cashmere is a native State' of India, bounded on the north by the Karakoram Mountains, on the east by Tibet, .and on the south and west by the Punjab and North-west provinces. Politically it is an important State, guarding the north-west approach to India. The population is > Ve ifr 3,000,000, mostly Mohammedans. A Maharajah is a chief of greater importance than a rajah, the title borne by a Hindu prince. The British Government recognises in many cases the sovereignly of these princes, who are allowed to rule over “their own territory and to transmit the title to their heirs.] PARIS, Dec. 2. _ln connection with the arrest of Captain Charles Arthur, the aide-de-camp involved in the Midland bank case, the arrested man told an interviewer that he was completely ignorant of the Robinson affair. He never had “Mr. A’s” cheque in his possession, and certainly made no use of it. He is anxious to appear in an English Court as soon, as possible to establish his , absolute honesty. ..Arthur’s counsel (M. Gide) raised an objection that the extradition law d°ultL not apply, because his client is an Englishman. It is understood the French authorities will hand Arthur over to Scotland Yard, leaving Gide’s contention to be decided in the English court. ■ Arthur’s counsel further states' that during the extradition proceedings he intends to put forward most important new facts, which hitherto have been Kept m the background. “Arthur has been the victim, like ‘Mr. A,’ of a band of international swindlers who robbeff him of half a million francs ” counsel added. “I have advised my client to speak out plainly.” - _ . LONDON, Dec. 2. . ihe Evening News states that Captain Arthur is a descendant of the ancient kings of Munster. He married a famous Irish beauty, from whom he Was divorced. His wife, when giving evidence in the divorce proceedings, declared that Arthur’s income was £7OO per annum. _ The Daily Chronicle states that Sir w will defend William Hobbs (a solicitor’s clerk who figured m bank case) at the Bow Street proceedings on Saturday.
