TARANAKI’S RAILWAY.
AN .OPTIMISTIC NOTE.
ME. HAWKEN AT ELTHAM
From remarks made by Mr. O. J. Hawken, M.P., at the Eltham Chamber of Commerce on Monday night, it seems that the time is not far distant when residents of this province will be able to travel to Auckland via the Taranaki-Main Trunk railway. Mr. Hawken said he knew that the deputation that went to Wellington to urge the early completion of the' line had done good work. The railway had to wait a certain time, but they could expect that within a reasonable period it would be completed. Continuing, Mr. Hawken said he considered the line' to be one of the- most important in New Zealand yet to be completed. There was now only a small section unfinished, and when that was done Taranaki would feel the benefit. In timber and coal especially there would be a considerable saving in freight. The Minister of Public Works in his last report had said that the tramway was to be carried on and the way made easy for the major works. There were a few big tunnels to be put through, but Mr. Hawken said he hoped that m a few years the line would be open.
