MOTOR WORLD.

SOUTH TARANAKI ASSOCIATION

Owing to various causes little more has been done to enrol branches, and Patea has to wait. However,, last night a deputation went down and after a very successful meeting the branch was formed with every prospect of being a very live centre. There is not much more left of the district. It now be holds all branches to keep the work going and enrol every member possible. A NEW SPEED CENTRE. Pendine, the little Carmarthenshire village, has come into prominence this week by the making new motor speed speed records on its wonderful beach. It has many miles of beach, as level as a billiard table, and so liafd that the passing of a car does not leave a mark on_its surface. Here speed trials for motor cycles often take place, in the presence of a large concourse. The towering cliffs, with picturesque, winding walks along the top, make the beach and village exceedingly sheltered. . The ancient church, with its two hagioscopes and holy-water stoup, efO\yiis the hill, but the modern village has grdtvn down to the sea, and the well-wooded coast is studded with'p'retty villas. There is a ancient camp at Gilman Point, and a very fine mansion delightfully situated, called Llanmilo. MOTOR CYCLING. At a recent meeting of the Hawera Motor Cycle Club it was decided to again hold a reliability trial similar to that which -was held on New Year last. The course chosen will be the same, namely, from Hawera to Te Kuiti andback, but the fixture will be on Boxing Day and the day after. The president (W. Claringbold), captain (W. W. Davy), secretary (W. G. Walk ley) and other officials are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm 'in being again to the fore in arranging • a ■ fixture which will, no doubt, become an annual one, and, given fine weather, the motor cyclists of New Zealand will have their ambitions fully realised, as the event is ah open one and eptries are being received from all over the Dominion. It must be remembered that the Hawera Motor Cycle Club is the pioneer club of New Zealand, and that the only reliability trial is held under the auspices of this club. - To make the competition as keen as possible the programme will be classified, a place being given for the various tastes of all riders. Side-Cars, solo, lightweight or heavyweight will each have a class. As is the, custom, there will be secret checks stationed at .various places en route. Points will be awarded on the individual performances, time, .appearance of machine, etc. The tool kits, of course, will be sealed, and a heavy penalty kill be the fesnlt of a brpken seal. The. practice of last year of a rider reporting at a eheok before his time then waiting for his time to. elapse will be abandoned. The competitor will pass through his check at the exact time and go right ahead, whether early or \ late, so that the points and prizes gained will he the result of keen competition. . Of course, a half-hourly luncheon will be allowed at Awakino or some stated place, and on tlie return journey will be the same. After arriving at the destination the machines will be handed over to the officials, who will inspect and allot points. The motor c5 T cle enthusiasts ip Te Kuiti will meet competitors, and also will escort .them part way on their journey. Records of last, year’s trial show that 25 entries were received, some of which were from very distant provinces. The route taken then AvaS over the Taumatamaire Hill, but had to be abandoned on the return journey on account of the condition of its surface. The route 'this-:year -will be Through the Awakino Valley, both to and from Te Kuiti. The official report showed that the test was the greatest feat of endurance it Avas almost possible to put both rider and machine to. r This. year proves to be hot quite so difficult, as much more, road has been metalled, but several milhs of neAvly set metal and newly formed cutting betAveen Awakino and lohgaporutu will give the competitor all the necessary endurance and reliability test that is required. The full programme will he hdvertised; posters and. circulars will be distributed Avithin the next few days, and, given fine Aveather, the trial shotild prove, of great value to the officials as well as the competitors.
