CRICKET.
ENGLISHMEN ON TOUR. MATCH AGAINST VICTORIA. RAIN INTERFERES PLAY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT' MELBOURNE, Nov. 14. Play began to-clay in the match between Victoria and the English team. The Englishmen, who. hatted first, had lost three wickets for 113, when rain caused the cessation of play • for the day. The weather was dull'and threatening when play began, and the wicket was slow. The attendance was, good, and 15,000 were present at one stage during the afternoon.
Giliigan won the toss and sent Hobbs and Sandham in to open the innings, Wallace bowling. The scoring was slow, the fielding being keen. Hobbs was well caught by Ellis behind the wicket. He had batted 70 minutes, and hit two boundaries. Ponsfoad, at cover, missed Hearne when he had scored five, but it was a difficult chance. The weather became showery, and the luncheon adjournment was taken.
On resuming, Mayne, at point, brilliantly caught Hearne off Liddicut. Hendren was applauded when he came in and opened carefully. Liddicut wias maintaining a perfect length, but He:ndren’s off-drives were effective. Woolley pulled Wallace to the pickets. Then rain came on again, apd the players raced for' shelter, Hendren being applauded when he won the sprint. Play was resumed a quarter of an hour later, when Woolley drove Hendren for three and four. Mayne was nursing his bowlers ~ Woolley left the crease for a time to the accompaniment of jocular barracking. On resuming rain came on again, and play was suspended, the tea adjournment being taken.
When play was resumed after tea Woolley and Hendren were “digging in.” Woolley drove a high one to Liddicut just out of reach. Hendry was howling soundly, keeping the runs down. Woolley then cut Liddicut for four.
light became bad owing to tlie rain, and play was stopped a third time. Giliigan and Mayne inspected the wicket at 4.40 p.m., and play was abandoned for the day.
