MONEY-RAISING.
FOR CHURCH WORK. LOTTERIES CONDEMNED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N-, Nov. 14. The moral effect of lotteries and horse-racing was referred to at today’s session of the Presbyterian General Assembly. The following resolution was passed unanimously: “That the assembly enjoins all deacons’ courts and management committees to abstain from making application for permits for lotteries, and to abstain from all such questionable methods of money-raising for Christian work.” The Rev. McLean stated that no Presbyterian Church application for a lottery had been made to the Minister for Internal Affairs since’ September, 1923, and for the four years immediately preceding only five applications had been made by Presbyterians. A further unanimous resolution was as follows:’ “That the Assembly reaffirms its condemnation of gambling in all forms, and declares its relentless hostility to the totalisator as being an economic waste and degradation of. true sport, a prolific source of crime, and the cause of misery and shame. In the opinion of the Assembly the legalising of the totalisator has given it an air of respectability, which increases the moral danger to the community. The Assembly deplores that, despite the acknowledged evil consequences of gambling, the warnings of judges and others, and the protests of the churches. Cabinet Ministers and members of Parliament should have preferred th£ demands of the racing clubs to the moral opinion of the churches.”
