NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By Telegraph.—Special to the Star.) CI-TRTSTCHUROH. Nov. 8. The New Zealand Cup meeting was opened in brilliantly fine weather, but a cold easterly wind made matters unpleasant towards tbe end of the day. The course was in excellent order, and there was a large attendance. Backers nad a bad day. as it was not until the last race that a. lavonrite scored. Santiago was a much better favourite than Cerebns and Le Forte in tbe Spring Hurdles, with the winner fourth choice. Co rebus and Frisco Mail led Kerry Star over the first hurdle. .Passing the stand Cercbus'aml Frisco Mail were together, followed hv| Kerry Star and Bedrock. At Cults' Cerebos was just in front of Frisco Mail and Bedrock. At five furlongs from home Frisco Mail and Cerebus wont on together in the lead, and they were followed- several lengths away by Sir Wai, Le Forte and Fassin’ Through. They raced together to the last hurdle, where Ce rebus wa« beaten. Passing Through went on to win by three lengths from Le Forte, with Santiago eight lengths away and Frisco Mail three length's further hack. The winner scored very easily, but it will be surprising if Santiago does. nor do letter next time out. Hvrax fell and broke his leg at the fence near the six furlong post, subsequently being destroyed. Tlkn. was hacked down to a short price in the Spring Plate, with Agitato and Dazzling Light next in order of favouritism. Dazzling Light paying a really good dividend. Ilka was first out, followed iiv Dazzling Light, Agitato and Ivilceit, who were joined at ihe end of the two furlongs by Rawene. A little further on Sun Up made a. forward movement, and at the half mile post was third, just, behind Ilka, and Dazzling Light. Beaching the straight Sun Up retired, while Bawene, Starmist and Kileeit were ; prominent behind Ilka and Dazzling i Light. Tlka was beaten at, the dis- ; tanoe. Tn a great finish Dazzling ' Light beat the fash finishing Bawene , hv a head. Starmist was a nose away. • with Ivilceit a similar distance back ; fourth. it was a good performance on the part of the winner ; for she
took on all: comer*. It showed her Trentham form on the first day to bo ail wrong.
Winkle's Best was backed as unbeatable in the Limvood Handicap, the eventual winner; Monoxide, paying just On a third of a century. Beep Drive and Clontarf were the smartest- to begin, and led to the course proper, with W’inkie’s Best, Ivuhio. Monoxide and Bemnure handy. Beep Drive, Clofitarf and tVinkie; s Best were beaten at the distance. Monoxide drew out with Bemnure and Kuliio next; then En Route put in a good run. but eoukl not quite reach Monoxide, who won by a length. En Route beat Bemnure by a good head for second place, while Ivuliio was close up fourth, and the Tank and Winkie’s Best next. The big field of 33 runners c-aused a good deal of scrambling, and the form in this race may not prove too reliable to follow. Waetea and Kukume, who had gone wrong, and Tanadees, who is in reserve for the Derby, were the Cup scratchings. .Tarleton, Sunart, Beucalion, and Musketoon were the ites, with everything fairly well supported. Deucalion and Bumptious were j the first to show out, and led past the stand from Limelight, Gold Light, Empyrean, Sunart, Dame Straitlace, and Carpentier, who- were in a bunch, Mantua., Lucinette, and Winkie’s Rebel bringing up the rear. At Cutts’ Deucalion and Bumptious were two lengths in front of Empyrean i with Limelight and Carpentier handy, followed byGold Light and sunart. Going round the back Carpentier moved up a, little, while Lucinette also improved her position, and at the six furlong post this pair were joined by Limelight, just vehind Bumptious and Deucalion. Half a mile from home there was little to choose between these five. Lusinette and Sunart turned for home just behind Deucalion aVid Bumptious, with Limelight and Gold Light moving up. Sunart drew clear at the distance, and went on to win easily by two lengths from Gold Light, who was a length and a half from Musketoon. The latter finished fast. Then came Lucinette, followed by Deucalion, Limelight, Bumptious, and Tarleton. The winner won very easily, but had Musketoon made his fun earlier he would have been hard to beat. He was galloping over everything at the finish. Lucinette did best of the light-weights, while Gold Light’s second was meritorious enough to comment on. Runnymede and Lady Cavendish were a. good deal better hacked than the bracketed Overdrawn and Circulate in the Welcome Stakes. Gyrene, the winner, paid a- good two-figure dividend. Lady Cavendish led in the early stages of the race, with Currency and Money Order tllei most (prominent among the others. On reaching the course proper Currency led, while Runnymede, on the rails, and Cyrene, on the outside, moved up. Lady Cavendish wag two lengths in the lead at the distance, but /Cyrene and Runnymede came up in a fine finish. Cyrene beat Lady Cavandish by a neck, with Runnymede half a neck away. Shirley was at the . head of the others. As the result of an inquiry by the stewards, Runnymede was placed second and Lady Cavandish third. J. Barry, the rider of Cavendish., was fined £lO for interference. This was a case of palpable interference, for Lady Cavandish went right over on to Runnymede, stopping him completely. Cyrene finished very well, but with ait uninterrupted run it seems certain that Runnymede would have.beaten him. The Banker was ahnost an even money favourite for the Apprentices' Handicap, Footfall, the winner, paving just over double figures. Otauru was first out from Cochy Bondhu, Shandree, The Banker, and Roman Archer. The order was the same to the . turn, but the leaders were then stopping, and Foofall. Chiekwheat and Fresco appeared on the scene, the firstnamed scoring by a length from Chickwheat, with Fresco a head away third. Retrospect, The Banker and Vindictive were next. The win was full of merit,
hut The Banker was interfered, with in the straight, and but for this would have been closer up. Tukia wound up favourite in the Stewards’ Handicap, but There: was plenty of money for Mireusdnta, Royal
Divorce and Fool's Paradise bracket, and Rerernoana and Penens, the winner being’at double figures. Fool’s Paradise, Gaillard, MoOrland and Mirensonta woe the first to show out, and led on to the course proper. Gaillard lasted the,, best of these, but be. was passed hv Penens, 'Suggestion, Tukin and Avola in the last, half-fur-long. Penens winning by half a dength from suggestion, who was a similar distance in front of. Tukia: .Avola, was a' good fourth and Gaillard, Fool’s Paradise and Last Crust next. Penens was lucky in getting a clear first, as the three behind him were finishing well, and had him doing his best at the end. Tresham was backed very confidently for the concluding event, but there was plenty of support for. Imperial Sport, Boadicea and Palestrina, and Imperial Spark led out from Mountain Lion, Clandhu, Boadicea and Tresham, with Palestrina last. At the turn Boadicea and Mountain Lion were showing the way to Imperial; Spark. Little River, Clandhu and Tresham. The last-named came away at the distance, but bad to be kept going to stall off Bonnie Winlcie by half .a length. Little River was a neck aw ay third, then came Mountain Lion, .Boadicea and Tvalakaua. The win wars a good one, but Bonnie Winkie surprised, bv bis finishing run, being reminscent of bis palmy days. Little River appeared to hold*a chance a furlong from borne, but weakened again.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) The Canterbury Jockey Club will race on Wednesday and Saturday of this week, while the Thames Club open their meeting on Saturday next. In King’s Speech and La Choiicas Trainer J. T. Jamieson has a couple of . pi’omising two-year-olds, and he should, secure some prize money with them. .
When Barometer collided noth a ! spectator at the recent Auckland meeting he interfered with Loughrea, which rvas Immediately behind him. Loughrea. is well, and may show up at Riceartou. The drop of; £16,400 in the totalisa-f’ tor figures may cause the Auckland Racing Club to reduce the stakes for the next spring meeting. When Tula fell at the recent Auckland meeting he was unlucky enough
to receive a bad cut on the forearm. Tit hi is usually very safe, but took off too far. hence the fall.
In all his races-of late Rational has not behaved well at the barrier, and in consequence Ims “tailed off’’ in the early part of iiis races. When carrying big weights it is hard to win under .such conditions.
The Hawke’s Bay-owned Toa Tana luis been, sent to lliecarton for the lnmllc events to he decided on the third and fourth days of the Canterbury Jockey Cluo’s meeting. Tuki and Dick, both of 'which were T": SIIC !S G - S!^n l 3)1 the Steeplechase at Llrerslie last ’reek, .are being sent nor.tli to compete, in the cross country races at Thames meeting. H Burt will ride Toa Taua. in the i hurdle races at the Canterbury meetmug. and as the black gelding* is well (just now, he is expected to* show up i m these events. H. EVa has had Dan Quin very well of late, but like many other trainers wno have not had the best of luck may lose tbe services oi-'-a good sort for already £TOOO has be’eii offered but was refused for Dan Quin. . The Taranaki ‘‘hacks/’ Bobu rite and Shut-eve. . showed lots of .speed in their races at the Auckland spring meeting, .and it should be only a. matter of keeping well for this pair to do well in races. I The Australian-bred Pavo was made j the medium of a big commission, on the second day of the present Auckland meeting. He was going well at the home turn, but over* the last bit failed to. run on.
Royal Present’s owner is desirous of winning the Alison Cup at the Takapuna. meeting, and with this in view Rbyal Present will fee prepared for the event, and as he is well may take beating. The owners Rational have tired of this once fine sprinter, and die is in the sale list. There is just a chance that' Rational may be sold to an Australian buyer. Thunderclap ran his best race at the recent Auckland meeting, and ivas unlucky to meet such a smart lightweight as Quinette. In various papers different trainers are given as looking after Thunderclap. As a matter of fact, for a long time the owner (Mr. H. L. Abbot) has trained Thunderclap. The non-acceptance of Royal Blood for the Stewards’ Handicap once more draws attention to the fact that many horse-trainers are too “matter of fact” in these business matters, hence at times owners undoubtedly suffer certain losses. '■ In Dan Quin, Quin Afebey has again got a worthy representative who is not only brilliant but consistent. After running Miss Egypt to a. head at Avondale, Dan Quin succeeded in winning the six furlong, event at the Waikato Hunt Club gathering, and followed this up by capturing both “sprint” races at Elllerslie. i The luck of ID. Copestake is right out at present, and he has had more than his share of falls. On the opening day of the Auckland meeting Copestake, when rkling Narrow Neck, collided with King ' Amans,. receiving injuries which prevented him from riding in the event, which eventually fell to Narrow Neck. The rider r named had to be sent to hospital, but was discharged again a couple of days later.
