A DISCOURAGING REPLY.

TO LOAN APPLICATION. BY ELTHAM COUNTY COUNCIL. Farther attempts by the Eltham County Council to obtain loan money which." should have been forthcoming from the Government some time ago do not prove encouraging, the latest letter from the Prime Minister stating that owing to the demands made on its resources the State Advances Department is not at present in a position to deal with any application immediately it is received. It will be remembered that owing to a shortage of money the could not obtain any loan money from the Government last year, but this year they lifted £SOOO, the maximum amount allowed by the law. However, in view of the fact that the council got no money last year, they are making strenuous efforts to obtain £3OOO, the balance of the South. Riding loan, which has lately been described by the chairman (Cr C. J. Belcher) as a millstone round the neck of the council’s finance.

At Saturday’s meeting of the council a letter was received from Mr O. Hawken, M.P.. who wrote enclosing a letter from the Hon. W. F. Massey in respect of the council’s request for the loan of £3OOO. Mr Hawken in his letter said he had told the Prime Minister that the money was wanted in February, and he would try in a few days to get a more .favourable reply. The Prime Minister in his letter stated that he had communicated with the State Advances Superintendent, who had informed him that owing to the demands made on its resources the department was not at present in a position to deal with an application immediately it was received. If the council would complete and return to the Superintendent the preliminary aonlication it would be recorded in order of the date of its receipt in the office, and the County Clerk would be duly advised w’hen the department was able to deal with it.

Cr Campbell, in stressing the need for the loan money, said they could not go on with the work in the South Riding without" it. The letters were received.
