£SO FOR LIBEL.
v NEWSPAPER OWNER SUED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, Nov. 5. At the Magistrate’s Court. Tokomaru Bay, Frederick Louis Thomas, manager of the Tokomaru Freezing Works, sued .Robert- Crifcbin, late proprietor of the East Ooa-st Watc-h. lor £75 damages for libel in the report of a Police GouH case, in which the plaintiff was one of the presiding Justices, and editorial comments thereon. After lengthy evidence, Magistrate Levy, giving a verdict for plaintiff for £SO, said the real question at issue was whether a certain statement had been made by plaintiff. The evidence showed that the words had never been used. He therefore considered that the insertion of a paragraph by the defendant in the report was wrongful, and characterised the leading article as scurrilous in tone and quite unjust.
