LOGAL BODIES’ CONTROL
GREATER POWERS. AMENDED LEGISLATION. ' ! ■ (By Telegraph.— Special to the Star.) . WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. ine principal provision in the amendment to the Public Works Act introduced to-night will enable local bodies to have greater power over the control of heavy traffic The Minister of Public Works explained that the measure is a corrolory of the Motor Vehicles Bill. It enables local bodies to fix license fees extending over a wide area-, and to pool the proceeds, giving licenses to owners over an extended area. The proposed scale of licenses ranged from £o for vehicles, of two tons capacity up f° r vehicles of 10 tons capaeitv, the ,scale increasing according to weight. The effect would be to exclude the importation of motor vehicles exceeding 10 tons capacity. The Minister . mentioned that there were several instances in Hawke’s Bay and North. Auckland where local bodies had agreed to one set of traffic by-laws, and this would he authorised by the Bill. Another provision would; empower the classification of roads in such a way as to limit the weight carried thereon.
