BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. With, a sens© or 'hat which is appropriate and fitting, tin* School Comlnittee under their enthusiastic chairman, Mr J. Cocker, and inspired Oy tlieir able and energetic head teacher, Airs McNeill, arranged a special function for the presentation of prir.es won in the calf-rearing and root-grew mg competitions, one that would live in the memory of the young people, would serve to show; them that the community take a live interest in their doings, and would encourage them, so continue in their good and useful work. This gathering took place last night, and was wel lattended. The ffrst part of the evening was a concert, m which items were given by the childien, —choruses, duets, songs and recitations —•and songs by some of the adults— Misses Cocker <9) and Mr Silver (all encored). The children were traired by Airs AlcNeill and Miss Keliiher, and were a. distinct _ credit to their inst ructors . The opening item was a two-part chorus, in which the voices blended nicely. A capital duet was sung by Aliss Alc-Donald and E. Alajor, a most amusing character duet by Dick Silver and E. Alajor, and a recitation very nicely given by little Fanny Stockman, All were very well done and enthusiastically received. The accompaniments were well played by Air W- Alajor. At the conclusion of the concert, Air Cocker "prefaced the presentation of prizes with a short and very appropriate speech, setting out the good work done since their inception by the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, in encouraging the children to do practical v'ork oii the farm, in which they' acted o,n their own, and took a keen personal interest. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr G. H. Buckridge, who was one of the originators of the scheme of competitions, of Air A. J. Glasson, and Air R. Syme, wdio had done much ot the work of supervision and instruction, and . had done also a<Jot of the judging of root crops, and of Air E. K. Cameron, secretary of the Farmers’ Union Executive. In conclusion, Mr Cocker congratulated the school on their continued success, and urged the scholars all to maintain their enthusiasm for the w r ork of the clubs. He referred to some of the excellent results achieved. . The prizes were presented by Air Page, who, in a few* introductory remarks, stressed the enthusiasm shown by the schools, and said that the success achieved’ by Raw'hitiroa would not have been possible but for the great interest taken in the w*ork by the schoolmistress, by the chairman and members of the school committee, and by the parents. The total value of prizes taken liy the children was over £2O. The list of successes was as follows : Awards 1922-23.—D. Stanton, Ist carrots, 3rd championship; P. Wood, 2nd carrots; L. Gernhoefer, 2nd mangolds ; E. AlcGuinness, 3rd carrots. 1923-24—P. Wood, Ist calf -rearing, 2nd championship, 2nd carrots; F. AlcNeill, Ist carrots, Ist championship; L. AlcDonald, 2nd calf-rearing; G. Cleaver, 2nd calf-rearing; L. Gernhoefer, 3rd calf rearing and 3rd carrots ;E. Alajor, 2nd mangolds; R. Boot ten, 3rd mangolds; E. Major, best kept plot. F. Gillanders’ special £2; P. Wood, “Faterine” special, £5 ss. The hall was then cleaved, and dancing was enjoyed until the hour of 12. Excellent music was supplied by Air W. Alajor. Refreshments were served by a committee of ladies. It was altogether a very pleasant and enjovable evening.
