STRAIGHT FIGHT
TRIANGULAR. CONTESTS ABANDONED. NEW ZEALANDER. A CANDIDATE, BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 15, 1.50 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 14. The abandonment c.f triangular contests is spreading, especially in Scotland-. Fifteen Glasgow constituencies will, all have straight fights. The Speaker, Mr Whitley, will he elected unopposed for Halifax. Mr Amery, speaking at Birmingham, said that -the Labour claim that the Government had strengthened the ties of Imperial sentiment is a monstrous impertinence. The Government had abandoned the Singapore base, showing an unpreparedness to help the Dominions in the event of attack. The Times characterises Mr Wheatley’s declaration that Britain is entering into iiolitical class- warfare as little better than criminal lunacy. Class divisions were mo|fr- dangerous.- when the country had tnf tremendous task of recovering from the effects of the war. Conservatives should show that they stand for an active, sincere spirit of loyalty, comradeship and unity in facing anj r sacrifices involved cheerfully, whether between masters and men or component parts of the Empire. Candidates who support this ideal will defeat the apostles of class war, who seldom appreciate anybody except missionaries of strife and sedition at home or among the Empire’s enemies abroad. Among candidates is Mr Hillary, a New Zealander, who is standing as Liberal candidate for Harwich. The’first election rowdyism is reported from Belfast, where a crowd, throwing rotten eggs, broke up a Labour meeting and chased the candidates half a mile.
