BALLYMENA DESTROYED. DAYID WINS THE PLATE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Oct. 12. The weather was fine and hot yesterday for the final day of ; v the A. J.C. meeting. The course was in good order. The attendance was 45,000. The fields generally were small, the absence of “stars” making for more uniformity.. Bathos and Bosh were the only New Zealand representatives in the Chester Handicap, and neither L showed up. . " The Steeplechase was a unique race, remarkable chiefly for the way the two leaders were locked together for two rounds of the course. The winner’s pace on the Rat stood him in good stead. . Pittsworth and Callu fell at the third hurdle, and Bonnie Russell fell at the same hurdle in the. Second round. The rider of Cerise and Grey came off opposite the St. Leger stand, but he remounted and finished third, a furlong behind Urchin. The Randwick Plate provided . the sensation of the day. David and Ballymena were fighting desperately and the large crowd was becoming greatly excited, but just when on approaching the straight Ballymena seemed to be getting things his own way he suddenly fell with a leg broken." After that David had an easy win, being accorded a rousing reception on returning to the paddock with" his third Plate. The results are : Canobury Stakes—Yule Cake, 1; Grecian Orator, 2; Valdor, 3. Eighteen started. Won by a length and‘a half. Time, 1.2. Waverley Handicap.—Brown Rajah, 6.11, 1; The Lance, 7.6, 2; Prince Woorak, 7.3, 3. Thirteen started. Hit made the running most of the way.. Brown. Rajah took charge entering the straight, staved off challenges by The Lance ancl Prince Woorak, and won by half a length. Time, 2.59 i. Chester Handicap.—Foxy, 8.7, 1; Encre, 9.2, 2; Bardoleur, 9.2,, 3. Nineteen started, including Bosh and Bathos. Loyal Maid led into • the straight, Encre lying fourth. Foxy, Encre and Bardoleur came up on the rails, enabling the first-named to-gain the verdict by a short head. Time, 1.14;j. \ Dowling Steeplechase.—Streldon, 10.2, 1; Grand Urchin, 10.6, 2; Cerise and Grey, 9.0, 3. Six started, including Pittsworth. The placed horses were the only ones to finish. Pittsworth fell at . the third hurdle. Streldon and Grand Urchin kept together till the straight was reached, and then Streldon went ahead and won by eight lengths. Time, 6.36 L t Randwick Plate.—David (Brown), 1; lomatin (Maher), 2; Les‘Paddington. 3. Ballymena was the only other starter. Les Paddington made the pace in the early stages, Ballymena lying third. David led Les Paddington past the stand, hut going along the back Ballymena took charge, with David close behind. Turning into the straight David challenged Ballymena, when the latter fell, leaving David to win by five lengths, a length separating second and third. Time, 3.283. Clibhorn Stakes.—Meenah, 1; Border Chief, 2; Solidify, 3. Thirteen started. Bedonia and Sir Alick led into the straight, where Meenah came from the field and won by a length and a half. Time, 1.39. Final Handicap.—Virgin Gold, 9.0, 1; Wild Goose, 8.8, 2; Honey Bee, 8.4, 3. Thirteen started. Won by three-quarters of a length. Time, 9 53. After the accident Ballymena was destroyed. From the stands he appeared to falter and fall, but the jockey (Con. Reed) explained that he did not fall, hut that the near foreleg was smashed like a carrot, ” BALLYMENA’S MISHAP. SYDNEY, Oct. 12. Mr Ivnight, owner of Ballymena, who sailed on Thursday, was informed by wireless of Ballymena’s mishap, which consisted of a compound fracture close to the fetlock joint. Brown, the rider of David, says his mount was not near enough to" have galloped on Ballymena, and Reed, the latter’s rider, confirms this. CAULFIELD -MEETING. OPENING DAY’S RESULTS. THE HAWK WINS THE STAKES. MELBOURNE, Ocfc. 3 The weather was showery ancl the attendance large, including the State Governor and party, at the opening of the V.A.T.C. meeting yesterday. The going was soft. J. Pike won' the double on The Hawk (who- is in the Caulfield Cup with 9.0) and Soorak. Lord Falmouth led always in the Steeples. Great cheers greeted Heroic’s win in the Guineas. H. Cairns had the mount, and from a berth on the extreme outside he get away with the field. In the early stages Heroic was thiid. behind Some Speed and Sir Dighlock, hut once in the straight Heroic came away and won easily. Veisivio ran a game race. Heroic has now won eve,;- £21,000. His trainer, Cecil Godby, also won the race in 1921 with Demetrius. Heroic’s stake winnings as a three-year-old are a record. Soorak was fourth in the first part of the race for the Toorak Handicap, and wen narrowly. It is trained bv H. MeCalmain. Soorak is in the Caulfield Cup with 8.3. J. Scobie, the trainer of The Hawk, has trained six winners of the Caulfield Stakes. Yclhynia was a fair third in the Yolo Welter. Demades, by the New Zealand sire Bernothenes, " cost 1650 guineas as a yearling. It led all the way. Paravane was fourth in the first portion of the Debutante Stakes’ journey, biA led into the straight, and won nicely from the favourite ’Manacre. The results were; Volo Welter.—Demandes (8 0) 1. Tailing Heme (9.0) 2, Volhyjiia (8.0) 3.

The Hawk mined AYhittier in the straight and in a sterling contest- won with its last stride by half a head. All Sunshine was three lengths away. Time, 1.574. INTERNATIONAL RACE. NEAV YORK. Qct. 11. At the Latonia course, Sarazen won the third international horse race, Epinard being second and Madplay third. Sarazen’s time was 2miii. 04-ssee. for a mile and a quarter. He scored a wondei*ful victory, but turf followers agreed that Epinard was just as wonderful in defeat. The French colt worked his way up through interference in the. final yards of the stretch and made a desperate challenge to overtake the victor, who was only a length ahead at the finish, with Epinard gaining at every stride.
