“OUR FELLOW CITIZENS.”
WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY. CRITICISED RJ PARSON. ■» BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. OTTAWA, Oct. 9. The Rev. Henry Howard, pastor of Pirie Street Methodist Church, Adelaide, interviewed in Montreal, said: “I fail to reconcile America’s farreaching efficient Christian missions with her political attitude and policy towards the peoples to whom the missions minister. If Eastern peoples have a, sense of humour, the spectacle of Western nations sending carloads of Bibles, while violating the spirit of the teaching at home, must appeal strongly. We poke our noses into all corners of the globe, but we set barriers against others who have a perfect right to do the same.” Mr. Howard declared that there were large areas in Northern Australia where it was impossible for whites to live. He added: “I do not see the reason why these should not be thrown open to our fellow citizens of India. I am quite sore that if an appeal was instituted by India to the Privy Council, our legislation against the coolie would be knocked out by the broader Imperial view that the peoples of the Empire are free to travel where they please within'the Empire,”
