LABOUR DEFEAT
' EXPECTED NEXT WEEK. GENERAL ELECTION IMMINENT. 8Y CABLE- PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Oct. 3, 2.15 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 2, The Evening Standard says it is generally accepted by all parties that a general election is imminent. The Liberals have not definitely decided whether to support the Conservatives’ censure motion arising out of the Communist prosecution, but the prevailing opinion is that they are committed thereto. In such aft event the Government will be defeated next week. Mr Baldwin, departing northwards to-day, said he was convinced the Conservatives would support the Liberals on the anti-Rnssian treaty motion. Mr. Baldwin believed the Ministry was satisfied an election was inevitable in November at the latest, and he believed that Mr. MacDonald favoured an immediate appeal to the electors, preferring a decision next week instead of waiting for the Liberal motion. Mr. MacDonald’s speech at the Labour Party Conference on October 7 is expected to be in the form of an election address.
