RECORD PRICES FOR DAIRY STOCK.
Record prices were the order of the day at Mr. Gordon Wills’ sale, conducted by the Fanners’ Co-op at Denbigh Road, Hawera, yesterday, September 30. The day was fine and there must have been in the vicinity of 500 people present; Right from the commencement bidding was particularly animated, and on the implements, sundries, and pigs very high prices were obtained. Sows made £l3, £l2 10s, £l2, £lO 10s, £8 10s, etc. The herd was well above the average, and showed that Mr. Wills had paid a great deal of attention to type and breeding when laying the foundation of his herd, and also in subsequent replacements'. Testing had also been carried out and records were available for the purchasing public. 1 Eearly in the sale it was evident that buyers did not intend, to stop for a. few pounds. The first cow to be offered after keen competition quickly reached £3l. From this on there was no lagging in the bidding. A very nice young cow, bred by Mr. V. H. Nowell, made £56. at which price she was knocked down, amidst applause, to Mr. D. Malone, of Kaponga. Another cow, bred by Mr. Hector Taylor, realised £SO, and was purchased by Mr. Pollock, who has taken over the property. Seven other cows realised over £3O, and tile whole herd of 56 averaged £2O. Pedigree Jersey bulls made 35gns. and lOgns. respectively ; yearling heifers £4 3s; calves £l. Taken all over; this is one of the most satisfactory sales ever conducted in South Taranaki. Right throughout there was a tone of confidence which has been lacking .since the boom.
