OIL TANKER CROSSES THE PACIFIC.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ' WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The American oil tanker Shreveport, from California, came all the way across the Pacific - without anyone touching the wheel. She is fitted with a Sperry gyro compass'and pilot, and the steering is wholly done by the • mechanism. The only occasions -- on which a helmsman is required are on entering port or a narrow channel.
