LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
» “A HARDY ANNUAL,”
HAWER'A’S OPINION
The deviation of the railway between Levin and Marton was one of the subjects discussed at the monthly meeting of the Council of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last evening. At the meeting, which was held in the secretary's ofliee, there were present: Messrs. E. C. Fletcher (chairman), F. W. Gillanders, B. McCarthy, P. Bond and A. Sellar. > The Levin Chamber of Commerce asked support to the resolution directing the attention of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Railways and Public Works to the claims advanced from time to time concerning the carrying out of a deviation of the railway' line between Levin and Marton.
“A hardy annual” and “absolutely impossible under existing conditions” were the remarks of members.- while the chairman drew attention to the fact that the TaranakirMairi Trunk railway was an urgent and necessary proposition.—The letter was received. With a view to reducing the freight on certain Eastern products, the Taranaki Chamber wrote asking the co-operation of all traders interested in inducing direct steamers from Calcutta, Samara,ng, Batavia and Singapore to call at New Plymouth. The steamers usually went to Newcastle for a load of "coal, and if the necessary minimum consignment of 450 tons for New Plymouth could be made up . representations to the shipping company should meet with success. — The letter was received, the secretary stating that.he would draw the attention of traders to the matter.
The matter of drafting remits for the forthcoming annual conference of the Association of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce was left with the vice-president and secretary.
