SOUTH TARANAKI ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the South Taranaki Cricket Association was held last evening. Present; Messrs H. it. Penny (chair), A. Dalgleish, P. R. Pulton, V. H. H. Crawfoacl. Wacson, H. "Hughes, Bates (Hawera School);.. Thomas (Teciinica'l School), ..mi j, , Neilson (secretary,).' : Prior to the commencement of proceedings Mr ts. McCarthy annc.unced that he would donate a trophy again this year to be awarded to the player gaining the highest batting average. The report tor the'past season snowed that seven teams took part m the senior competition, which was wen by the OkaiaWa Club, with the Excelsior runners-up. It was gratifying to see cue interest and the close contest m the competition. Eight, teams took part in the junior championship, and this resulted in a win for the Hawera B team after a play-eff with the same •mb’s A team. Three representative matches were played, as follow: Two against the North Taranaki Association. which were both lost, and one against North Taranaki Country Association, which was won. The B representatives had played two matches with the North B team, and lost both. The Southern junior representatives had won their game with the Northern section. The balance-sheet showed that £ll 9s 2d had been received, and the same amount expended. There were no outstanding debts. The thanks of the association were due to Messrs Svme and Co., Ltd., for the' woodwork of the handsome junior shield, and to Messrs R, D. Welsh and the various clubs for donations towards the silver mountings. The thanks of all cricketers were due to the Press for full reports of matches aid the great assistance given to the •ame generally. Tile following officers were elected for the ensuing term -.-—President, Mr B. McCarthy (re-elected); vice-presidents, presidents of affiliated clubs; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Neilson;' selection committee. Dr. Maunsell, Mr B. McCarthy; delegate- New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr H. C. Ridley, auditor, Mr J. G. Nichols: fixture com-, nut-tee.-'.Messrs Fulton, Mahoney, and, Neilson; executive committee, pre-.tidem and secretary. A letter from the N.Z. Council gave the details of the groupings in the Liwke Cup competition, and showed the South Taranaki Association as grouped with No.th Taranaki. It was decided to agree to the scheme, and that t~e group mat -h with the north be arranged to decide the challenger from the group. The Eltham Club wrote suggesting tint it might he possible this year to arrange a Thursday competition, as teams from Eltham, Stratford and Inglewood were likely to be entered. The association decided' to reply that it was sympathetic to the proposal, andthat it would help towards the formation of a Thursday competition. Mr Hostick, of Hawera, has donated a enn for a Wednesday competition, and the details were left to a subcommittee consisting of Messrs Hostick, Johnson and Worrall. The matter of the primary school competitions was brought under review, and the meeting decided on the suggestion of Mr Bates, of the Ha we* a School, that tlie whole Question should he left with the various teachers for them to arrange groups and fixtures. A suggestion was brought forward that the association should drop the ■vuuial town and country match, but after some discussion it" was decided +•> arrange the match as usual, the date to be fixed., bv the fixture committee. The usual A and B representative I■, matches are to. be arranged wirh the Noi-th Taranaki Association. The donation of a cup by Mr. Silson, of Hawera, for the purpose of encouraging school cricket, gave rise to., a.-good deal of discussion. It was finally decided that the secretary should interview’ Mr. .Si Ison with a view to the cup being given, for a challenge competition between the Hawera. Stratford, New Plymouth and Feilding Technical Schools, who all plav annual matches. The opening of the new season was fixer! for the 18th October, all entries to close on the 9th idem.
