EVASION BY YOUTH.
(fiY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, Sept. 17. Before two Justices of the Peace at Gisborne, James Seal appeared on a charge of failing to register as required by the Defence Act. Senior-Sergeant Fitzpatrick said defendant had not registered at all and was now over the age limit and would not have to serve.
Defendant said he was a slaughterman and he /worked at various places. He admitted he was aware that he had to register. During the past year he worked at the Hawke’s Bay, Waipaoa, and Hicks’ Bay freezing ‘ works, and the previous year he was in Australia. He admitted he had been living in Gisborne about eight or nine year's! The Magistrate said; “You have practically evaded service for three years.; and therefore you will be deprived of your civil rights for the same period, and you will be fined £1 and costs.”
