A SOLEMN COVENANT.
GOVERNMENT URGED TO
RESPECT IT,
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION ) NAPIER, Sept, 12. The Waiapu Diocesan Synod to-night unanimously carried the following resolution: 1 ( That this Synod strongly protests against the attempt being made to induce the Government to break the solemn covenant that was en.tered into with the Maori people in the King Country when the natives of that area freely gave all the land required for the construction of railways and roads on condition that the Government made provision that no liquor should be allowed to be sold in that area. Such contract the Government is.bound in honour to observe. This Synod further urges that, more effective measures be taken than have hitherto been used to secure the enforcement of the pledge that has repeatedly been giyen by the Government that the original agreement shall be maintained.”
